Rand "Randy" Axelrod

January 23, 1956 — May 4, 2025

Cherry Hill, NJ

Rand Axelrod, (known to some as Randy), age 69, died by suicide on May 4, 2025. He suffered for a long time with depression and anxiety.

Rand grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his partner of 21 years, Dr. Robin Plumer, and his father Norman, siblings Larry and Sheryl, and their families. His mother Melba died 2 years ago. He was married to Stephanie Shearer for approximately 11 years.

He graduated from Ithaca college with a degree in biology, and then pursued a Master's degree at Rutgers. He later attended Jefferson Medical College and obtained a degree in cardiac ultrasound.

He worked in electronics for RCA in Lancaster for many years, and then pivoted to making extracts and flavors for Schenk’s, where he was a manager. After moving to NJ, he worked in Virtua Marlton hospital as a telemetry tech, and later was part of the member services staff at the JCC of Southern New Jersey.

In 2008, Rand moved to New Zealand with Robin where they “found their place.” They lived in New Zealand for almost 10 years. While living Down Under, they visited most of New Zealand, Australia, and much of the South Pacific. It was an amazing, life-changing adventure. These were their best years together as a couple.

While living in New Zealand, Rand created his own business as “Da Bread Dude” selling fabulous homemade bagels and breads.

He loved motorbiking, swimming, scuba, whitewater rafting, photography, travel, and dogs, and he was an avid reader. He believed in “extreme snorkeling!” He was a committed Democrat, and felt very strongly about protecting the environment. He loved his beer.

He was very involved with the South Jersey Men’s Club, and volunteered in several community groups. He was a loyal friend to many.

No one can underestimate the hopelessness associated with severe depression. Despite treatment, he made this choice that no one who loved him will ever understand. Also, smoking kills in more ways than one.

Memorial contributions may be made in Rand’s name to: any Democratic organization, the ACLU, Sienna Wildlife Fund, or Make a Wish foundation.
