An urn may be a container, but after a Voorhees Township, NJ cremation service provider delivers your loved one’s ashes and you place them in an urn, it becomes a sentimental object that requires proper care.

A variety of materials are used to create modern urns, each with its maintenance requirements. Here are the five types of urn materials and how to clean and maintain them.

Granite

Granite is a popular material for urns. It’s sturdy but porous and can stain easily if not cleaned properly. You can purchase granite cleaner from a supply store or use mild dish soap and warm water. Then rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Wood

Wooden urns are usually carved from mahogany or oak and are relatively easy to care for. The wood is often finished with a sealant or paint to protect it from moisture.

Use soapy water to clean the outside of the urn, then rub it with a soft rag to remove any remaining dirt or stains. You can also use furniture polish on the outside of wooden urns every few months to keep them looking shiny and new.

If it’s cedarwood, wipe it down with soapy water, then dry it thoroughly with a lint-free cloth before returning it to storage.

Plastic

Plastic urns are sturdy but can be prone to cracking. If your plastic urn is broken, it’s best to replace it with a new one. If yours isn’t damaged, use a mild soap and warm water to clean the outside of the urn. Be sure to dry the urn completely before storing it.

Amber

Amber is a hard, translucent fossilized resin that has been used for centuries for jewelry and other decorative items. Amber urns can be displayed on a mantle or table or hung on a wall using their built-in hook.

To clean amber urns, use warm water and mild dish soap to wipe down the outside of the urn and allow it to air dry thoroughly before returning it to storage.

Stones

Stones are often used for urns, and many of them are pretty beautiful. Stones absorb moisture from the air and must be cleaned periodically to prevent mold and mildew from growing.

To clean stone urns, use a soft cloth with warm water and mild soap. Rinse well with clear water, then allow it to air dry thoroughly before returning it to storage.

Metal

Metal urns are usually made of brass or bronze and are often used for military veterans’ ashes. Metal urns may be sealed to protect them from moisture damage, but you should keep them out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

To clean a metal urn, use warm water and mild soap on the outside of the urn. Rinse with clear water and allow it to air dry thoroughly before returning it to storage.

No matter which type of urn you choose, you should treat it with respect and dignity at all times.
